A Product of Solatube International.
The first question you must ask yourself, "is solar right for your home?"
Several factors must be taken into account when considering this type of
product. To achieve maximum performance from a Solar powered vent, it is important to
locate the unit in the area of your roof that receives good sun exposure all day
long.
1. Which direction does the roof surface face?
Exposure of the solar panel to the sun is the most critical
factor when determining if
solar is right for you. Southwest is the best direction for excellent performance all
year long. South offers very good performance also. West gives you the advantage
of late day operation, which reduces the
intense heat during the hottest part of the
day. For Roof Mounted fans, very steep roofs that face south or southwest can use
either a Low Profile or Pitched flashing.
2. Are there any obstructions that will cause shade or shadows?
Tall trees, chimney's, or your neighbors home should
not be so close as to create shade or shadows in the location of the
Solar vent. Since the unit is powered by the Sun, heavy shade
can cut the performance by as much as 50 percent.
3. Is your attic insulation installed to the proper "R"
Value?
If your attic insulation is less than the recommended
"R" Value for your location, no amount of attic ventilation will eliminate
the damaging conditions of intense summer-heat and
winter-moisture. Insulation and ventilation, work together as a system
to control and eliminate these conditions.
4. Gable Mounted or Roof Mounted unit?
Determining which application is simple. If you have
existing "whirlybirds" or some other
type of roof ventilator, than replacing this unit with a new
Solar powered ventilator is the
best option. If you have no roof mounted venting units, and you have gable
vents in the
peak of your home, than a
gable mounted unit will
work best. Also, a roof mounted
Solar powered vent will operate efficiently in either of these applications.
